Graded Aggregate Base (GAB)

Graded Aggregate Base Construction Atlanta

Stewart Brothers has placed millions of tons of graded aggregate base (GAB) on projects throughout our history. We pride ourselves on performing the job professionally and delivering a high-quality product and service to each customer. GAB is a crushed stone base material used in construction that is sometimes referred to as crusher run. GAB is a combination of course and fine stone material ranging in size from sand to approximately 1.5-inch stone. In the greater metro Atlanta area, GAB is typically granite because of the ample supply of granite stone quarries throughout the region.

Granite is a hard stone that has angular edges after it goes through the crushing process at the quarry. GAB material will “lock” together because of its angularity when compacted with heavy rolling equipment, making for a highly suitable base material for construction projects, especially roads and parking lots. When GAB is placed properly by professionals over stable subgrade (soil), it can last for decades and provide a long-lasting base for asphalt pavement. When the subgrade and base are strong, generally the asphalt pavement will be strong as well. The paved surface will hold up longer and require less patching, sealing and resurfacing maintenance over time.

Recycled Graded Aggregate Base

We also place recycled concrete GAB as it is sometimes specified or requested by owners and customers depending on their preferences. Recycled concrete GAB is an alternative product to granite GAB if available in the vicinity of the project. Recycled concrete GAB can often save money and has comparable quality to granite GAB. Since this product is crushed recycled concrete (concrete that comes from demolition sites) and then screened to a specific gradation (stone size range) much like granite GAB, it is greener and often allowed as a substitute material. Like granite GAB, recycled concrete GAB is most reliable if comes from a GDOT-approved source.
